Emerald Grotto

THE NATURAL WONDER

The Emerald Grotto is one of the most extraordinary natural attractions on the Amalfi Coast—and the entire Mediterranean. Discovered in 1932 by fisherman Luigi Buonocore, this marine cave lies approximately 24 meters below sea level. Light entering through underwater openings refracts in the water and illuminates the entire cave a deep, eerie emerald green, giving this cave its legendary name.

The cave is only accessible when the sea is calm. In case of rough seas, the entrance may be temporarily closed for safety reasons.

Two Ways to Reach the Cave

Elevator Access
From the road, take an elevator carved into the mountain’s rock that descends directly to the landing stage inside the cave. A spectacular entrance.
By Boat from the Sea
You can reach the cave directly by sea aboard a small boat from Amalfi. The entrance is through a low opening in the rock—you must lower yourself to the bottom of the boat to avoid hitting the ceiling—an adrenaline-filled moment that makes the arrival even more magical.

The Boat Experience

The visit takes place aboard small rowboats, guided by local boatmen who reveal the cave’s secrets and legends in an atmosphere of absolute silence and magic.

The Green Light Phenomenon

Emerald Reflections: The heart of the experience is the incredible optical effect created by sunlight filtering through an underwater opening, painting the entire cave a brilliant, surreal green.
Crystals and Walls: The ceiling is embellished with salt concretions that shine like diamonds, creating a unique contrast with the dark rock.

Sculptures of Nature and Man

Stalactites and Stalagmites: Millenary limestone formations reflected in the crystal-clear water, visible both above and below the surface.
The Submerged Nativity Scene: An unmissable gem; a ceramic nativity scene rests on the crystalline seabed, clearly visible thanks to the transparency of the water.
